One Pattern Behind All Work

It's easy to treat each business process as unique. But almost all work reduces to the same underlying pattern: a set of inputs, a process that acts on them, and a set of outputs and outcomes. Once you see this pattern, the question of what AI can do becomes far more concrete.


Inputs Are Now Multimodal

The inputs to modern workflows arrive in many forms. Structured data from databases and software tools. Unstructured text across emails and documents. Audio from calls. Images and drawings. Today's AI processes across all of these, structured and unstructured alike. The one area still maturing is video, and AI is catching up there quickly.


The Process Layer

The middle of any workflow is where rules, logic, judgment, and decisions live. It's where work gets analyzed, calculated, and pattern-matched. This is precisely the layer where AI performs well: applying consistent logic across high volumes of mixed inputs and recognizing patterns that would take a person far longer to surface.


Outputs and Outcomes

The outputs are the decisions and actions a workflow produces: documents generated, communications sent, systems updated, exceptions escalated and flagged for a human. A well-designed AI workflow doesn't just produce these outputs, it makes the entire process observable and continuously measures its own quality against an evaluation system.


Why This Matters

This systems thinking is the most important idea for any leader thinking about AI. All work can be understood as a series of workflows, and any workflow is inputs, a process, and outputs. As long as a workflow can be defined this clearly, you have the blueprint for an agent that can deliver it on par with or better than people can.

That is the art of the possible, made practical. The framework turns an overwhelming question, "what can AI do for us?", into a series of answerable ones. Map the workflow, define the three parts, and the build follows.
